Tzidia is a San Diego-area band that specializes in music from The Balkans, Eastern Europe, and beyond. Each band member has played music from these regions for over 30 years. In addition to concert performances, including for SDSU and the Center for World Music, we play for folk dance parties and festivals.
Marie Hayes has sung Balkan harmony music in San Diego and Orange County, performing with Harmonija, Eastern Exposure, Trio Zheni, and Zimzala. She periodically teaches Balkan singing in schools through Center for World Music. In addition to Balkan music, she has also performed with the Turkish chorus Grup Anadolu, and Sisters in Treble.
Paul Johnson plays fiddle tambura, and trap drums with Tzidia. Other instruments include guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and field drum in different genres of music. He has played semi-professionally, mostly on the West Coast.
Mary Marshall is a percussionist who plays doumbek (hand drum), defi (frame drum), tupan (two-headed drum), zils, and wooden spoons. She has performed in Oregon with Slavej, and in San Diego with Eastern Exposure and Dromia. She also often performs with visiting Bulgarian musicians in San Diego.
Dan Ziagos plays a chromatic piano accordion, primarily playing Balkan music. He has performed with Anoush and Turlu in the San Francisco Bay Area, and then with Dromia in San Diego.
