Wiro Park Playground

Updated:  06.10.26

PROJECT STATUS

The Park Equipment Replacement project began in July 2023 and initial design began in September 2023.  The project includes three parks, one of which is Wiro Park.  Equipment options and layouts have been received and reviewed.   A Community CPP meeting was held on December 12, 2024.  An additional neighborhood meeting was held at Wiro Park on May 29, 2025.  Final design and permitting were completed in November 2025.

The project design was presented to City Council for approval in April 2026, however, in lieu of approval, Council directed staff to conduct additional public outreach with the surrounding community and Parks and Recreation Commission.   Staff will return to Council for design approval once the additional outreach has been conducted.

A neighborhood meeting to collect additional feedback from the community on the Wiro Park Playground Equipment Replacement Project was held on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
The Public Comment Feedback Form closed on June 4, 2026.  Feedback from the meeting will be compiled and presented along with the project for approval at Parks & Rec Commission and City Council.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has determined that the playground equipment at Wiro Park requires replacement due to its age and repair costs.  The playground was installed in 1992.  Routine maintenance and repair are typically not able to prolong the service life of playground equipment beyond 20 years.  The sand and poured-in-place flexible ground cover will also be replaced with engineered wood fiber mulch.  Equipment replacement must remain within the existing footprint of the park in order to maintain approved use permits.

The OGALS grant will cover most of the cost for replacing the playground equipment and ground cover.  The City's Park Improvement Fund will cover the rest.

Replacing playground equipment that has exceeded its serviceable life contributes to the City of Encinitas Strategic Plan goals of maintaining a safe and livable community through well maintained infrastructure.
