El Camino Real Separated Bike Lanes & Intersection Improvements
Updated: 12.10.25
PROJECT STATUS
The preliminary project feasibility and conceptual design began in August 2024. Conceptual design options were prepared and included as part of the HSIP Cycle 12 Grant application. Caltrans notified the city the project was selected for funding in February 2025. Staff presented the project to the Mobility and Traffic Safety Commission (MTSC) in May 2025. The HSIP 12 Grant award was accepted by City Council on October 22, 2025, along with direction on the project design.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The intersection at eastern Santa Fe Drive and South El Camino Real is being redesigned to include protection for bicyclists. Design and construction of the Santa Fe Corridor Improvements project, eastern phase, includes improvements up to the intersection at Santa Fe Drive and S. El Camino Real. This project will complete the corridor safety improvements all the way into the intersection and will carry over similar design elements.
The intersection design preserves the existing geometry along El Camino Real so the intersection design is more consistent with intersections throughout the City, while implementing protected bike lanes from Willowspring Drive to Avenida De Las Adelsas, along with new and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle crossings at the El Camino Real and Santa Fe Drive intersection. The project will also include a raised island on north side of intersection, ped/bike crossing lights/signals, delayed red/green lights, raised protected curbing on the east side of the intersection for bikes, and bulb-outs on the northwest and southwest corners of the intersection on Santa Fe Dr.
