PROJECT STATUS

The design of temporary Fire Station 6 is underway. On September 24, 2025, City Council approved the award of a design contract to PBK Architects, Inc and they are currently working on Tenant Improvement Plans for the current Fire Station 6 location at 770 Rancho Santa Fe Rd.

Previously, the project team was directed to complete the design and permitting of a temporary station at Little Oaks Park.  Conceptual project drawings were completed in March 2026, and a community meeting was held to solicit input regarding the project on April 7, 2026.  In summer 2026, the project was deemed infeasible. 

ABOUT THE PROJECT 

Fire Station No. 6 covers the majority of the Olivenhain community in east Encinitas.  Olivenhain is a predominantly rural community with an elevated wildfire risk compared to other areas of the City. A temporary station has been operating from a commercial business center, located at 770 Rancho Santa Fe Rd. The station operates 24 hours a day and is staffed with a two-person crew and equipped with a Type 6 patrol unit.  

To meet the growing needs of the community and the fire crews stationed there, an expansion of the current lease agreement has been entered with the property owner at 770 Racho Santa Fe Rd to accommodate a three-person crew and a Tye 1 fire engine. 

The expanded facility will serve to better mitigate operational gaps affection fire protection and emergency response for structure fires or large-scale wildfires in the rural areas in and around Olivenhain. 

The scope of work includes interior tenant improvements and the construction of a new apparatus bay for the Type 1 Engine, with minor site improvements.
